Futuristic fashion is making a comeback this spring

Futuristic fashion is making a comeback this spring

Step into the SS20 season with our new TMA – Futura collection. The trend for futuristic, oversized eyewear has come full circle since the 70s, and we’ve reimagined our cult-classic sunglasses for a new decade.

What made the original Futura collection unique the first time round?

Born in the 70s, this extravagant collection became a runaway bestseller, sparking the trend for bold, futuristic eyewear. The space-age style was beloved by celebrities of the era, who added the fashion-forward design to their personal collections.

The original Futura sunglasses were unisex, brightly colored and some designs included a signature U-shaped cutout that made the style instantly recognizable. Dora Demmel, Futura’s original designer, said she wanted to capture customers’ imaginations with the extravagant Futura pieces, with the hope it would encourage them to discover Silhouette’s other designs.

How has Silhouette reimagined the classic with TMA – Futura?

The Futura collection has been constantly evolving since the 70s. As the name of the latest iteration suggests, Silhouette has combined the legendary glamor of the original Futura with the ultralight design of Titan Minimal Art.

The new-edition TMA – Futura incorporates many of Silhouette’s cutting-edge technologies developed over the last 55 years. The collection’s designer, Gerhard Fuchs, says, “My goal was to put the reinterpreted Futura collection to the challenge of combining lightness and comfort with an expressive design. I wanted to project this cult eyewear into the future.”

The reimagined designs do just that. The heavy acetate of the originals has been replaced with super-light SPX®+ and high-tech titanium, and the futuristic full-rim mid-section is balanced with fine, hinge-less temples.

Functional as well as fashionable, the new designs feature the latest in sun protection, too. A free-form shield allows the lenses to align seamlessly with the frames, and the latest patented Silhouette Light Management® technology offers unprecedented protection against UV rays and blue light, available for colors Classic Brown Gradient and Blue Mirror Gradient.

“Despite their extraordinary design,” says Fuchs, “TMA – Futura glasses create a harmonious, stylish look. The subdued, shimmering colors accentuate any style and add a certain something to any modern outfit.”

The future is now (on a catwalk near you)

The SS20 Paris catwalks featured all sorts of retro revivals, from the power shoulders of the 80s to the playful prints of the 60s and 70s. On the other hand, many designers looked to the future instead of the past. There were futuristic metallic hues and space-age cuts for both casual and occasion-wear on the catwalk.

As both a vintage classic and a trend pioneer, the TMA – Futura collection unites these two SS20 styles, meaning there’s never been a better time to invest in this cult eyewear. You may have spotted TMA – Futura at London Fashion Week 2020, the collection graced the catwalk of Malan Breton's AW show.
