“When the sun’s shining it doesn’t show us its darker sides. Unfortunately, these sides usually become noticeable only years later. That’s why intelligent sun protection is a must for all sunglasses,” according to Rupert Spindelbalker, Research and Development Manager at Silhouette. He and his team have worked for many years on the effects of the sun on the human eye and develop special remedies and intelligent sun protection to counter these effects.

Intelligent sun protection and a relaxation programme for the eyes

The most efficient and intelligent answer to the risks from sunlight is IQ POL, a product exclusively developed by Silhouette. Polarized sun protection lenses – used in 14 of the 15 models from the SUN Collection 2009 – eliminate troublesome reflections, which can give false perceptions and cause the eye major stress. Sunglasses with IQ POL lenses offer a unique eye relaxation programme whereby the eyes tire less quickly and can stay relaxed even in extreme glare – and still provide intensive colour and contrast perception.

Blue light, that part of visible light which can also cause long-term harm to the eyes – e.g. cataract, glaucoma and macular degeneration diseases – should also be prevented from reaching the eyes. This is achieved in Silhouette sunglasses via a blue light filter that absorbs up to 97% of blue light.

All models from the SUN Collection 2009 naturally provide 100% protection against UV light of up to 400 nanometres wavelength, and they are available with green, grey or brown lens colours for absolute true colour perception. Annoying water droplets are deterred by the sun protection lens’s water-repellent layer, and troublesome glare by the five-layered anti-reflective coating on the inside of the lens.
